I was sitting in my 2003 Nissan Altima in a parking lot. Nearby one of my daughters was practicising karate. I had the windows down because it was 83 degrees. It was a sultry, overcast July evening and I was reading Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut. Suddenly a sparrow landed in a small tree near my car. The tree was marooned in a five foot square base of mulch. It sat in a sea of parking spaces. The tree was slender and no more than twelve feet tall. It had no more than twenty skinny branches to its name. Its leaves were frond-like, each about three inches long and made up of about two rows of ten tiny pointed leaflets. The bird flew into the swaying fronds. It hung on them like a mischievous boy on a rope swing. It flitted onto a branch and sat there a moment. It didn’t think much about me or the tree. I think the tree enjoyed its company. I know I did. Then it was gone as suddenly as it arrived. Hello goodbye.
